Stealth Budget Airlines

This lucky lady got to spend a weekend with Stealth Budget Airlines. The fierce team is competing in Singapore's Red Bull Flugtag Competition in October. Don't let their good looks fool you... they have both beauty and brains. This team is composed of PhD students and engineers and they are here to win.

Meet Genevieve, Maxine, Martina, and their Captain - Hassan.

You might recognize this duo from Thailand...

Free swag included a GoPro!

Thanks for riding with SBA.
Stealth Budget Airlines made a late arrival to the Flugtag conference (like any respectable budget airline) but they were definitely the most spirited team and the crowd favorite. Watch them take-off on October 28th at Sentosa!

Like them on FACEBOOK for some quirky and entertaining feeds.

Singapore's National Night

This week I was in a meeting and the CEO made a remark about Singapore's shrinking population (and how his marketing lady needed to have more than just one kid.) My friend from the US just shared this video with me today about Singapore's National Day which happened while I was in Thailand.

Making babies is your Singaporean civic duty! I also feel like a local because I actually know all the references of this song...

Trying to make the most of my last two weeks in this country. This past weekend I spent time riding around town on the back of a scooter, wake boarding, and walking around Orchard Road. Yesterday, I finally made it to the top of Marina Bay Sands for Ladies Night at Ku De Ta.

Phi Phi: In the Water

Our long-tail boat. We're docked at the famous bay from The Beach.
My first experience snorkeling was in Phi Phi. The waters are crystal clear and warm. There is absolutely no cause for hesitation to get into the ocean. During the day, I saw black-tip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, packs of squid, tons of fish (including clown fish), and an eel. I spent the majority of my snorkeling time by myself while my friends did their scuba diving training.

This big school of fish followed my friend and I through the waters.
Our boat captain steering the long-tail.
There are few things more relaxing than floating in a big clear ocean with no one but the fish.

The most memorable snorkeling experience was when I accompanied my friends on their night dive. They had all descended into pitch black water and I was left alone on the long-tail boat with the boat captain that could not speak a word of English. Did not matter - I shared a little smoking break with my new friend and put on my snorkel gear. I pointed out into the water and he took me to the perfect spot.

I dropped in and had just a brief moment of panic. I felt completely exposed by the darkness below me. But, I quickly realized why my boat captain friend dropped me off at this point. Below me I saw four rays shining along the underwater cliffs. My friends and their instructors were exploring about 20 meters below me. Suddenly the ocean did not feel so vast anymore. I was able to get a distant look of the reef and cliffs their gear spotted. Their lanterns illuminated their silhouettes and schools of fish swimming between us. I had a blast letting the glowing bubbles from their tanks roll around my body before reaching the surface. I followed them for almost their entire dive.

I lifted my head out of the water to de-fog my mask. I looked up and the stars were out and bright. I looked for the captain out in the distance before he turned off the lamp on his boat. What?! I figured that was a sign to come back. I put on my gear again and started to swim towards him.

It was a whole other world. I had lost the divers below so I had no real sense of direction. There was nothing I could see... except the tiny specks of green light that sparkled around my body. The more I waved my arms and kicked my legs, the more the bioluminescent plankton lit up like stars following my movements. Between the plankton and myself, we were putting on an amazing underwater light show for one. I danced around for as long as I could before remembering that I wanted to be back on the boat before the diving crew came up. My heart felt like it was doing a happy dance as I came up from the water with total appreciation for the starry night sky and the starry sea below.

Phi Phi: On The Island

I went to Phi Phi (pronounced pee pee) with two friends and no concrete plans. I knew I would be happy doing just about anything. I spent most of my time snorkeling and swimming, but I managed to make some new friends and squeeze in a few nights of bar hopping, a massage, manicure, kayak and boat trips, and great food.

We flew over Koh Phi Phi on the way to Phuket. Monkey Beach is the little bay on the far right of the island. The main beach is on the right. The ferry pulls into the beach on the left of the strip. Our hotel was up in the mountains towards the bottom of the island.
The ferry pier. The only way to get to the island is by ferry. There are no cars on Phi Phi and the only motorized vehicles are scooters that police use to go from one end of the island to the other.
Everything is within a 30 minute walk or long-tail boat ride away.
The streets of Phi Phi are lined with massage parlors, t-shirt shops, tattoo shops, diving centers, and restaurants offering food from all over the world.
Buckets are offered nightly for consumption.
There were a few of these taxis... but they were mostly used for luggage.

Our hotel was one of the higher accommodations on the mountain. The climb up the stairs was brutal.
But the view from our balcony was worth it. We were above all the noise of the village and the rowdy backpackers.
The island is filled with backpackers from all over the world. There were many European twenty-somethings spending a few days here or working at the dive shops. There were also many Chinese tourists, but they would only spend a few hours on the island before returning to mainland Thailand. The island is tiny and you could pass the same person two or three times a day. This place makes me want to drop everything and play and explore all day - every day. The Thai locals are friendly and helpful and the visitors are all young, relaxed and happy to be part of the spring break atmosphere.

Love for Thailand

I have been to a handful of Asian countries this year and have not been enticed to make it my home... but then I went to Thailand. I just want to escape to this paradise for a few more months, maybe years. I only stayed in Phuket and Koh Phi Phi but I'm in love. Here is a glimpse of just one afternoon...

Taking the sea kayak out for an adventure.
A little snorkeling on the way.
Stopped by Monkey Beach. Monkeys are terrifying.
Long-tail boat is Phi Phi's mode of transportation.
Kayaked to a remote beach.
I will post something proper later this week. I can't wait to share some stories.

Packing That Duffle Bag

I'm heading to Thailand this week! It's Singapore's National Day on Thursday, so all the businesses are closed which means I'm heading out of town...

I'm flying into Phuket for the night and then taking a ferry to Koh Phi Phi. We don't have any concrete plans... which is how I like it. I'm taking my DSLR and my waterproof iPhone, so hopefully I'll be capturing some quality shots.

And for Australia...

I bought my one-way ticket to Sydney for September 8th and my 6-month visa was approved last night. I'm all set to spend some time with the Aussies. Once my living accommodations are finalized, I'll be purchasing tickets for StereoSonic ... good thing my roommates love to dance :) and as always, visitors welcomed!

Harry Potter Fan

... and not ashamed to admit it. I went to the exhibit here, in Singapore, and geeked out for an hour. The exhibit includes Harry Potter props, costumes, and sets from the movies. No photos were allowed, but I managed to sneak a snapshot of me in the Great Hall from the display screen.

I also bought Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and a chocolate frog.
